Hey Boy. It's Peak Fall. Let's go pick apples and mull some cider

Hey boy,

It’s peak fall.

Let’s put on our flannels over some layers and walk out among the rust colored leaves. We don’t have to talk a lot because the beauty of the place is going to do the talking on its own. But if you want to, we can talk about our parents or Thanksgiving plans or whatever. I’ll listen. But wait, is that the sound of a pileated woodpecker? Did you hear that? It's the sound of peak fall.

Hey boy,
It’s peak fall.
Do you play a wind instrument? I’m putting together a band called wood smoke and winter, but I think we’re going to practice this fall and maybe hole up in a cabin come winter and sing about all the things we’ve lost. Did you lose something sometime? Maybe your childhood or a piece of yourself? Let's go sing about it and write song lyrics.

Hey boy,
It’s peak fall
We can put on our scarves and sneak by Starbucks to get a pumpkin spice latte. Even though neither one of us really likes the synthetic taste. It’s a right of passage, pouring our drink out over the crumpled yellow leaves on the street two blocks from my house.Afterwards, we can walk by trees and look at bits of deep blue sky between barren branches. It's peak fall.

Hey boy,
It’s peak fall.
Let’s go apple picking somewhere out in the country, with green rolling hills, and homemade pies and apple cider doughnuts. It’s so easy to pick a lot of apples very quickly, but I know you like to stick around and try and get as many non-conventional varieties as possible. We can use one of those apple pickers or maybe just climb the trees like when we were children.Later, we can make some pies and apple crisps and lie around and talk about our favorite romantic movies.

Hey boy,
It’s peak fall.
We can just stay in and read our books today underneath our blankets. Because it’s nice to finally be in a season where it’s okay to get underneath blankets and just be cozy, and we can talk about the blanket forts we built as children, or just watch light cloak the trees. And maybe we can read out loud to each other when we get to good parts and use strange voices for different characters.

Hey boy,
It’s peak fall.
Let’s go for a hike somewhere with a view. We can hear the leaves crunch beneath our feet and feel the warmth of the sun as it gets through the trees. It’ll take a while for us to get warm, when we can only see our breath, but in the meantime we can keep our hands in our pockets and mumble things to one another until we feel warm. Maybe we'll hike up to a waterfall and listen to it patter down on the rocks and we'll tell each other about our grandmothers.

Autumn dreams <3

Hey boy,
It’s peak fall.
Why don’t you come over and do some baking? I have two aprons. We can just keep the heat low and warm ourselves by the oven while the pumpkin muffins are cooking. It’s okay to stand close to the oven. It’ll keep us warm, and we can listen to Bon Iver and talk about how good baked goods smell. And maybe later we can move into the living room and have a piece of something pumpkiny and laugh for a while.

Hey boy,
It’s peak fall.

Let’s go for a drive just to see the foliage. We can look at a map to see just how far we should go. On the way, we can roll down the windows and smell the leaves decay. And when we arrive we can marvel over the shades of yellow and orange and red. And on the way back, it'll be too cold to roll the windows down, but we'll do it anyway because we're wearing enough layers that no cold can touch us.

Hey boy,

It’s peak fall.

Let’s head out to a pumpkin patch and find something good. Later, we’ll come back and carve out some great jack-o-lantern faces and maybe roast some pumpkin seeds and wait for the cider to mull and nap in the afternoon, our faces, for once, not creased by worry.

Hey boy,

It’s peak fall.

We can dress up in scary costumes and go to one of those parties where all of our friends are drinking beer and handing out candy to little kids. And we can sit and talk about how we both dressed up as ninjas while we drink craft pumpkin ales and take pictures beneath the fake spider webs. Or maybe we can just go out to some colonial spot where George Washington took a bath and maybe talk about our shared love of American history. It's peak fall.

Best 10 Songs of 2015

It's getting to be fall, which means you only have a small amount of time to roll your windows down and listen to music. These ten songs all need to be listened to at obscene volumes while your windows are rolled down and people in the car next to you are watching you go through what appears to be a fit but what is actually you dancing and singing and maybe pumping your fist.

Imaginary Future-I Knew This Would Be Love

If you've known me a while, you know that this is virtually the only kind of song that I listened to for years--guy strumming slowly on the guitar, singing about love lost or gained, sometimes incorporating a piano, hopefully evoking a memory of rain and cities left behind. Goodbye to all the cities, parks lined with oaks, street cars, painted ladies, drifts of snow and all that I've left behind.

Catfish and the Bottlemen-Cocoon (Explicit)

By my estimation, everyone has at one point in time had a crush or relationship with a person who their friends didn't like. I think roughly 100 percent of the time. You know who never gives two shi-s? The person in the relationship. Also, this is the first of many songs that you should turn up.

Milo Greene-Lie to Me

Great song from open to close. Let's dance a little bit.  You know I love to go out.

The Fool-Ryn Weaver

I don't want this song to be as good as it is. But really, it's fantastic. I'm obsessed with the part at the end when the song starts sounding like a CD skipping. This electronically infused song is peak Frou, Frou. If you get a ride home with me sometime, let's turn the volume up to 30. Remember when someone reminds you that you need your hearing for life that you also need to enjoy the spaces that take you there.

A Single Pill-Say Geronimo

Opening chord to ending, just a damn pleasure. Can you feel the sun breaking through some clouds, or maybe that time you went to a foreign country and hiked to a waterfall or stared at a piece of art until it felt like maybe this is exactly where you belonged.

Coffee-Miguel

It's okay to boy your head a little bit. And hey, I enjoy a good coffee in the morning as well. Granted this song is an edit of the original, which is a tad more explicit. But this is a head shaking lovely piece of music about morning sex or coffee.

Wild-Troye Sivan

Oh look, did we stumble across something hot? Let's snap our fingers a little bit.

I'm Ready-Twin Shadow

This song is like three different songs wrapped in one. It's cool. It's earnest. The guitar pops then we get some talking over, which everyone loves. Such a good song.

Go-The Chemical Brothers (explicit...but just for one word. Listen to it)

Let's all, everyone I've ever known. Let's go to Barcelona and dance all night underneath some strobe lights. And if you think I'm kidding, just remember that I love you.

Sedona-Houndmouth

Guys! Guys! If you can memorize any of these songs, maybe do this one because it was meant to shout along to. And if you can prove to me in a ten second quiz that you know the words I'll give you a ride to wherever you want to go, and we can look out at the sunset over the water, over the mountains, over the bare limbs of trees and sing together until we've shaken off these goddamn skins that keep us tied down to this world.

The best songs of 2015 continued

Moon-Eyed Walrus-Cayucas

This associative song, sounds a bit like a Dali painting come to life. But the chorus is the sort of thing that you find yourself turning up and singing along to...even if it's unclear what all the words are. Turn it up and sing along.

All I Want is to Be Your Girl-Holly Miranda (explicit)

The song starts with the days are short but the nights are long, we could eff in the sun and dance till dawn, but all I want is to be your girl."The kind of raw desire that suffuses the opening of this song is what makes it so good. And it feels like an inversion of the traditional girl strumming on a guitar song pining away for her man.

I Belong in Your Arms-Chairlift

This song doesn't waste time in being upbeat, which is always a pleasure. Who wants to wait around for the beat? Let's get right to work.

Uh-Huh-Romans

Remember the 1980's? Me neither. But the music was pretty drab. Or maybe it wasn't? This song is the best of all the 1980's packed into a song about how we're all superstars. We are.

Is this How you Feel-The Preatures

Let's dance around the room because just look at how hard this whole band is trying to be cool. I feel like I could ride my bike to this concert, with a handle bar mustache and a copy of something by Camus.

Rise up Singing-Trigger Hippy

If you don't like this song then you don't like life. And that might be an understatement. You probably don't like videos of baby animals doing cute things either. And also you think chocolate croissants are too rich. Get out of here and start shaking your head to this song.

Roll up Your Sleeves-Meg Mac

Is there clapping in a song? Yes. Let's dance underneath the stars or maybe just in a basement somewhere. I don't really care. Everything is going to be all right. Let's put our arms around each other and remember that we may not be alive forever, but we're alive right now and it feels so damn good.

Tear in My Heart--Twenty one Pilots-

This song is a mix of Green Day and peak Coner Oberst. So turn it up and let this girl carve your heart out while you scream along. It's okay. The song will eventually be over, and we'll still be here sitting around the table with a beer, all these people who have loved you since before you even knew who she was.

Flashed Junk Mind-Milky Chance

A couple of songs ago the Preatures were trying desperately hard to be hipsters. These guys are legit hipsters, and this song is so awesome to turn up and listen to with the windows down. And yes, they ride around on scooters in the video and pee on the side of the road. Take a moment while we still have decent weather to listen to it with the windows down and then maybe go do a handstand in a field.

Haim-Forever

This is a polished version of the Is this How you Feel Song, with a fantastic beat hopping you from chorus to chorus and a great bridge.
